Search Engine Marketing Knowledge Basics for search engine
optimization, organic rankings.
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search engine optimization is an art and science. On one hand,
there are some specifics that must be performed in preparation for
directing the robots and spiders to the appropriate pages.
This "behind the scenes" work involves knowledge and expertise, and
would be considered basic optimization that can be applied to web
sites across the board.
Key SEO Terms and Definitions
Search engine optimization's ultimate goal should be achieving
top rankings in the search engines for a website's most relevant
search terms. Building a presence within the search engines will
assist your company in gaining new business. The most relevant
search terms include those keyword words and phrases most common to
your business. Non-technical, descriptive, branded terms that
the general public might type in looking for your type of product or
service. Including alternatives to common services, for
example if your company offers laser hair removal, you may want to
target the larger market in addition to laser hair removal, that is
most commonly known, in this case the association would be
"electrolysis". Oftentimes businesses target the technical
terms that current customers and competitors are familiar with, but
potential customers may not be familiar. These are the search
terms that it is essential to rank highly for, and these are the
search terms that search engine optimization targets.
• Are you looking for
information about search
engine optimization?
• Are you new to SEO and trying to find a company who can help
your business achieve maximum visibility within the search engines
organic results?
• Are you working with a client who requires online marketing
and your seeking a quality search engine optimization company whose
single focus is to achieve organic results?
Keyword research
One of the biggest mistakes made is
forgetting the target audience when creating new pages. That's
rather amazing when you think about it, because you try to attract
the target audience to the site! The target audience should be on
your mind constantly!
Remember: people go online for two things, as a general rule:
to research information, products or services or to sign up/buy. We
are not talking about what some users do when they have time to kill
and type into the search engine, "Britney Spears" to see what comes
up. We are referring to those visitors that your company is
trying to attract.
So its important to keep in mind what most people might be
looking for when they arrive at your site, based on where their
level of interest is, or where they are at in the buying cycle.
Provide them with that information and bring them to your site, and
you'll stand a much greater chance of selling them your products.
Plus, you'll get outside of the large numbers of competition, in
many cases. In other words, try thinking of keyword research in a
different way. Don't think of it only in terms of your products or
services. Think of it in terms of your target audience and what
they're looking for when they go online.
Keep in mind that most research keywords for two- or
three-word phrases versus single keywords, because they don't want
to receive thousands of unrelated matches. Don't make the mistake of
targeting very general keywords and getting frustrated when those
keywords don't make it into the top 10. However, once you've
achieved top-ranking positions for several of your keyword phrases
and have increased your Web site popularity, THEN go after those
general keywords, if you choose. It's much harder to accomplish,
which is why it's best to start out slowly and work up, achieving
success and building traffic. Also, ranking high for a very general
keyword might increase traffic to your site, but it more than likely
won't increase your "conversion to sales" ratio. So remember we're
ultimately after traffic that converts to sales, not a bunch of #1's
that produce no traffic, or #1's that produce traffic that doesn't
convert to sales.
